Meet Walmart’s new U.S. chief people officer

Walmart’s Donna Morris, executive vice president and chief people officer, announced this week that Judy Werthauser will join the retail giant’s people team as chief people officer, Walmart U.S. on Feb. 6.

Judy Werthauser is the new chief people officer, Walmart U.S.

Werthauser succeeds Julie Murphy, who recently retired from the role after 37 years with the company. Werthauser will lead people strategy for an estimated 1.7 million employees in the United States, including those in stores, distribution centers and fulfillment centers, Morris wrote in a memo to staff.

Most recently, Werthauser was chief experience officer at Five Below. She previously held roles as chief people officer at Domino’s, vice president of human resources and later senior vice president overseeing transformation at Target, as well as HR roles at US Bank and Marshall Field’s.

“I am thrilled to say hello to Walmart,” Werthauser wrote this week in a LinkedIn post about her new role. “No other company impacts so many lives in such a tangible way. And no other company creates more opportunities. With around 1.7 million associates across the country, Walmart has an unmatched ability to help both customers and associates live better.”

Among Werthauser’s priorities will be improving employee wellbeing, developing a culture of belonging and improving Walmart’s “digital ways of working,” Morris, one of HRE‘s Top 100 HR Tech Influencers, wrote in her announcement to the staff.

Werthauser continued on LinkedIn: “I am excited to work alongside the world-class Walmart U.S. team as they bring the purpose of building a better world—helping people live better and renewing the planet while building thriving, resilient communities—to life. I can’t wait to get started!”
